The National Trust

Reviewing origin, sustainability and catching methods

Objective

M&J were asked to work with the National Trust to completely review their Fish and Seafood offering.  In particular, they wanted to review the key issues regarding origin, sustainability and catching methods, followed by a complete product review culminating in product redirection where necessary.

Action

Having conducted the review and established the range of species which complied with the National Trust’s rigorous criteria, M&J then put new systems in place to help both sides arrive at 100% compliance.  This involved bespoke solutions to the ordering system as well as operational training at M&J branches.

Results

Eighteen months on, M&J are continuing to review the available range with a view to bringing Marine Stewardship Council certified products and in particular, the children’s offering, to National Trust menus.

Meeting the stringent requirements and controls required by the National Trust was a challenge, but one that has been achieved, demonstrating M&J’s ability to offer ‘keystone’ solutions which fit customers’ requirements.  Following this, M&J have been involved in working with the National Trust to review their small coastal fishery operations and in particular, the Crab and Lobster fishery at Aberdaron on the Llŷn Peninsular.  This fishery is currently switching bait from edible wet fish to waste salmon, which is more sustainable and reduces costs.
